More wing questions 1 Year, 5 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi all

I have covered my wings and have begun rib stitching. and don't know how to get stitches in the bottom underneath the leading edge top skin. Meaning I can't pass the needle through to the other side and back. I have tried everything. Will I have to use rivets here or is there a trick?.

What would the combination of rivets and stitches look like?

Will I have to rivet the fabric down the ribs on the leading edge skin or will glue through the fabric to the entire leading edge suffice?

When I did mine I covered the bottom only and stitched the area in question. Then, I covered the top and stitched the whole wing. In your case I would bend a needle enough so that it would push back through the same surface, pull it through, then reverse back into the same hole to get the needle to where you want it to complete your knot. It can try your patience avoiding obstructions inside the wing. The stitch will just be around the lower cap strip. There are some places in the trailing edge behind the spar that need this same process. The extra hole that the needle makes where it turns around can be worked out with your fingers so that it will disappear. You will get it figured out when you get to the last rib!

I used the Stewart process and just glued the fabric to the leading edge on top. It seems to have stuck down OK. I have had others say to drill holes in the leading edge skin before covering in order to stitch in the area of the extended leading edge. I would think that a good application of glue would be satisfactory. After all that is all that holds fabric on plywood covered wings. No stitching at all.

That all sounds good I will still be able to stitch the second wing before I finish covering. I am a bit of a bull at a gate. Thanks

I did the same thing as Skywagon. I used the Airtech system and glued the leading edge.

What is the main effect of having a wing to high of angle of incendence or to low. By this I mean if it is called out for say 2 degrees and because of a build problem or something you end up with 1.5 degrees what is the effect going to be... Some tell me don't worry, some say it would be worse the other way...but certainly there has to be a point within reason and a point where it is to much or to little.
Sure would like to know.. This is based on the line starting at station 0,0 and ending 100,100 as in most wing profiles.
thanks
Scott
